Millions of people are involved in serious auto accidents or minor “fender-benders” every year. Speeds as low as 15 miles per hour can cause injury regardless of whether or not the occupants of the car wear a seat belt. While victims of serious accidents are treated in a hospital right away, victims of minor accidents usually walk away. These people do not even realize that they have been injured until days or even weeks after the event when they start to feel symptoms such as neck pain, back pain, headaches or dizziness. These unseen injuries are generally referred to as “soft tissue” injuries. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and treat soft tissue injuries and to look for the causes of potential pain.

After an auto accident, even if you are not feeling pain, it is highly recommended that you visit a Chiropractor. Here are some of the most common symptoms resulting from auto accidents that Chiropractors can evaluate and treat:

Whiplash: Whiplash is a term used to describe neck pain following an injury to the soft tissues of your neck (ligaments, tendons, and muscles). It is caused by an abnormal motion or force applied to your neck that causes movement beyond the neck’s normal range of motion.

Headaches: Many accident victims will experience headaches. Post traumatic headaches that get better in four to six weeks are considered acute headaches, but those that stay at the same pain level, start to get worse, or go beyond six weeks are more concerning.

Numbness: Numbness and tingling down the arms and legs, also known as paresthesia, can also include symptoms such as pain, burning, pricking, or creeping along the skin. These symptoms generally indicate a malfunction of sensory nerves. Chiropractors can examine the spine to check for injuries.

Dizziness (Vertigo): Dizziness is a common description for many different feelings and can be hard to describe. Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is one form of Vertigo. Vertigo is a medical term to describe the feeling of spinning, whirling, or motion either of yourself or your surroundings.

Lower Back Pain: Back pain is one of the most prevalent types of chronic pain resulting from spinal injury caused by a car accident. The forces created during a high speed car accident are enough to cause vertebral fracture and spinal instability which results in pain throughout the back. Chiropractic treatment takes the pressure off the joints of your spine, calming the nerves and relieving the pain.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or have recently been involved in an auto accident, contact your local Chiropractor, Dr. Kenneth Ross to schedule an initial consultation and exam. Dr. Kenneth Ross, at Altamonte Health and Wellness, treats back pain in patients of all ages. Call (407) 545-4389 to schedule your initial consultation.

Leaves are falling and it’s time to block off your weekend for fall yard clean up. Before you tackle the daunting task of raking and bagging all those leaves, read these helpful, common sense tips to help prevent potential back aches and pains.

Warm Up and Stretch: Raking leaves is considered exercise and like any pre-workout regimen you need to warm up your cold muscles to prevent injury and strains. Jogging in place for a few minutes will get your heart rate up and blood flowing to all your muscle groups. Stretch your back muscles by bending forward to touch your toes. Another important stretch is to squat into deep knee bends without twisting at the waist. Don’t forget to stretch your shoulders and arms. Hold each stretch for 8 seconds, release and repeat at least 2 times.

Choose Your Rake: The best rake to use will be one that allows you to reach leaves a short distance away from your feet without having to bend or twist. Rakes that are too tall or too short will force you to contort your body and cause muscle strain and pain. A new rake is worth the investment and can last for years.

Maintain Good Form: Don’t hunch over the rake. Proper position for raking will require you to keep your legs slightly bent, to keep your weight centered and to reach with your arms and not your back. While raking do not keep your feet planted in one position. Pivot your feet in the direction you are raking. While bagging the leaves be sure to squat and use your knees instead of bending over at the waist.

Take Breaks: Raking requires a series of repetitive motions which exhaust muscles. You should focus on switching your lead arm throughout your leaf raking session. For example, rake with your right arm forward for 10 minutes and then switch to your left arm for 10 minutes. Take stretching breaks often and drink lots of water!

Recover: After the work is done, be sure to stretch again. If you feel discomfort use ice to soothe the muscles.

Back to School means Backpack season. Whether you have a 1st grader proudly wearing his new Star Wars backpack or a college student schlepping the same backpack since high school, we should all be aware of the issues and pain that backpacks can cause at any age.
Applying a little common sense and choosing the right backpack can make a big difference in comfort and help prevent injuries. Here are some helpful tips:

One Size Does NOT Fit All!
Choose the smallest possible backpack that will meet all your needs. Paying a little extra for these features will pay off in the long run. Choose a backpack made with adjustable padded shoulder straps at least 2 inches wide. The backpack should be made with lightweight but durable material and it should include a padded back. Choose a backpack with hip straps or waist belts that when fastened, will redistribute the weight from the shoulders and back to the pelvis.
Also, consider a rolling backpack which will allow your child to pull their bag instead of carrying it. This solution allows for children to carry much heavier loads. Just be sure that they can still safely and effectively carry the backpack up the stairs or on and off the bus.

Lighten The Load!
Backpacks allow individuals to carry a heavy load and distribute the weight across the back and shoulder muscles. Overloading backpacks can strain these muscles over a period of time. The natural curves in the middle and lower back will be distorted which causes irritation to the spine joints. More obvious effects of carrying an overloaded backpack include the rounding of the shoulders. This forward-leaning posture can reduce balance and make children more likely to trip and fall. If you notice your child walking with rounded, hunched over shoulders, you should adjust the backpack and eliminate any excess weight. Try to limit the weight of the backpack to approximately 10% of the child’s body weight. If your child complains about the weight, make it lighter! Here are some tips to teach your children the proper and safe way to wear a backpack:
1. Load the backpack with the heaviest objects on the bottom.
2. Wear it on your back with BOTH shoulder straps on.
3. Adjust the straps as follows: Adjust the straps to fit the backpack snugly to your body, holding the bottom of the backpack 2 inches above the waist and keeping the top just below the base of the skull
4. Do not carry the backpack low near the buttocks

Be Proactive!
There are simple ways we can help to prevent any long-term back problems in our children while at the same time making their day-to-day routine more comfortable:
Listen to your children when they complain that their backpack is too heavy.
Remind them to use both shoulder straps if they are only using one and trying to look “cool”.
Help them clean out their backpacks and determine if they are carrying books or other objects unnecessarily.
Offer to take them shopping for a new backpack or a rolling backpack that will work better for them.

Like other smart shoppers, you’ve probably asked yourself if organic food is better for your health, or if the so-called advantages are just a bunch of hype.

Firstly, let’s evaluate the word organic and how it is applied Organic farming must meet certain standards when it comes to animal, environmental, and human concerns. Organic farming forgoes the use of chemical products in growing food. This is just one aspect of a larger concern for doing less harm to the environment, human beings that consume the food, and wildlife. The worth of the global organic market is over $27 billion. The approximate size of land devoted to it is as big as Italy.

The Meaning of Organic Labels
An organic label means two things: that any processors or importers used in association with this food product have been approved, and that it comes from a farm. Ninety-five percent of the ingredients in processed foods have to be certified organic, and the remainder of ingredients is subject to approval.

To receive certification that their food is organic, food producers have follow these rules: Chemical fertilizers cannot be used, as they contain nitrous oxide. One has to employ natural methods like manure, as well as crop rotation, the act of alternating planted crops so that more natural nutrients are left behind. Pesticides must also not be used. In the alternative, bugs are kept at bay by other insects, as well as by weeding and planting other crops next to each other in order to deal with each one’s pests.

Colorings, preservatives, and most other additives cannot be used. Humane treatment of animals is a priority. They must be given space to roam, be fed organic food, and farmers must follow minimum slaughter age rules. There are many other humane treatment guidelines for animals.

If your family has a history of heart disease, you may be worried that you will inherit it. It’s reasonable to feel concerned, as yearly there are nearly 1 million heart-linked deaths in America. Even so, there’s no reason to fret. Genetic predisposition is not the only factor that can play a part in your getting heart disease. There are many other factors that can counteract genetic predisposition, and these measures can have a greater impact on the lifelong health of your heart. There are a few tips that will help you care for and protect your heart health.

How You Can Have a Healthy Heart
A sedentary lifestyle and poor diet are a dangerous combination, leading to all kinds of health problems, including coronary artery disease. Make lifestyle changes now, and you’ll keep heart trouble at bay. Here follows some workable tips that can significantly impact your heart.
* Make sure to eat plenty of heart-healthy fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in fiber.
* Eat at least two portions of fish per week, and make sure seafood is part of your diet.
* Take inventory of your consumption of saturated and trans fat, and keep track of your cholesterol. 30% of your daily caloric requirements can come from fat; that’s it. One of the ways to lower your intake of saturated fat is to eat less animal fat. And refrain from eating hydrogenated vegetable oils to lower trans fat from your diet.
* Reduce or sodium intake. Cutting back on salt will boost your heart health.
* Select reduced fat options of dairy products.
* Attempt to receive nutrients from food instead of just relying on vitamins. Beans, for example, taste good and provide many benefits with its vitamins and minerals.
* If you don’t exercise, start. Exercise is instrumental in keeping your heart strong. Exercising helps control blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as helping to prevent diabetes. Exercising for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, will provide lifelong benefits. These 30 minutes can be broken up in 15-minute increments, such as walking in the morning and early evening. If you’re overweight, steer clear from fad diets that promise miracles but delivers only short-term results at best. These diets can put a lot of strain on your body and your heart.
* Give tai chi a try. Appropriate for a wide range of people and conditions, it works on balance and posture, and it boosts your heart’s health.
* Do not smoke. This is crucial for safe guarding the health of your heart.

Along with helping to lower the costs of health care, findings show that chiropractic care (as well as other wellness-based care) is able to positively influence behaviors and well-being. Nonetheless, recent discoveries have further connected the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments to the physiological processes within the cells in the body. As a result, chiropractic has entered the field of genetics.

One finding asserted that chiropractic care can influence the physiological processes responsible for oxidative stress and DNA’s ability to repair itself. Findings, such as this one point, to scientific explanations for the positive effects were reported by chiropractic care patients. Although more information is needed to solidify this assertion about chiropractic, the current information is on the side of chiropractic care.

The research focused on looking at serum thiol levels of patients who were not under chiropractic care versus those who were receiving either short-term or long-term chiropractic care. As primary antioxidants which measure human’s health status, serum thiol tests are able to estimate the DNA repair enzyme activity correlated with aging and lifelong health issues. The results from these studies show that patients who have been receiving chiropractic treatment for at least two years have maintained normal physiological states. The patients with the highest mean serum thiol levels were those who did not show symptoms while undergoing chiropractic care as opposed to those with a present disease. These patients also showed serum thiol levels in higher concentrations than normal wellness values.

There are many factors that affect how the nervous system runs throughout a person’s life, may it be physical, emotional, or chemical stress. It has been shown that nerve function has an effect on oxidative stress and cellular-level DNA recovery. A prevailing theory asserts that oxidative stress that comes from the metabolism’s creation of free radicals is responsible for aging and the development of disease. Through oxidative stress, DNA is damaged and prevented from repairing itself. DNA repair makes up for the damage that the environment causes.

According to different studies, chiropractic care is an efficacious way of addressing digestive conditions. As shown by one study, infants with infrequent bowel syndrome under chiropractic care demonstrated almost instant relief of their symptoms after a few sessions.

According to an extensive study, there’s a real connection between Crohn’s disease and misalignments of the spine. Affecting any region of the digestive tract, Crohn’s disease causes inflammation along the small intestine. Inflammation causes frequent emptying of the intestines and also diarrhea, and is painful.

The prevailing theory around the cause of Crohn’s disease is that the immune system is acting in response to a virus or bacterium. To address the inflammation of Crohn’s disease, corticosteroids are typically recommended. Side-effects of corticosteroids are of concern, however, for they can cause greater vulnerability to infection. Drugs that restrict the immune system may also be employed. In a search for drug-free treatment approaches, researchers explored methods that assisted the immunological system, as opposed to blocking it.

An additional study linked ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel disorder, Crohn’s disease, and many other conditions with spinal displacements. It showed that correcting those displacements caused improvement (and sometimes complete remission) of symptoms of Crohn’s disease. There’s an additional benefit to chiropractic care, research asserts. Chiropractic patients don’t only receive relief of their digestive disorders but also experience an enhanced quality of life.

Make an appointment with your chiropractic doctor to receive a comprehensive assessment of your digestive issue
What chiropractors do is correct misalignments that get in the way of nerve function. Such issues are corrected in a painless way. Also, misalignment correction has a way of eliminating the discomfiting symptoms.

Chiropractic care can benefit those suffering from digestive disorders by restoring the digestive processes’ natural rhythm. Nutritional counseling could encompass your chiropractic doctor’s line of treatment, along with the spinal manipulation you receive. Complementary methods like mineral supplements, healing herbs, and vitamins may also be recommended.

FL infantile colic affects normal infants, where the baby cries for three hours a day, at least three days a week, over the span of three weeks. Infantile colic has many theorized contributing factors, such as food allergy or intolerance, excessive gas, and abnormal peristalsis.

Infantile colic begins in the first week or two of life in an otherwise thriving baby. Infantile colic reaches a peak at 6 weeks and ceases by the age of 2-3 months. About 20-30% of infants are colic babies. Symptoms of infantile colic in Altamonte Springs usually emerge at the age when the parents have become stressed and tired from sleep deprivation, and occur at the end of the day. It is not surprising that parents with colic infants feel dejected as they are caring for their child.

Your chiropractor, Dr Kenneth Ross DC, will perform a thorough history and examination on your infant to determine the extent and severity of the infantile colic. Then, a personalized chiropractic treatment plan will be created for your baby.

Asthma, a reversible obstructive respiratory disorder, is a condition that is also called hyperactive airways. When it is not treated properly, asthma can become a life-threatening issue known as status asthmaticus.

Asthma is characterized by spastic contraction of the smooth muscle in the bronchioles, which causes extremely difficult breathing. Asthma is a hypersensitive reaction to foreign substances in the air in the bronchioles, states Dr Kenneth Ross DC. In 70% of asthma cases in those under 30 years old, the asthma is an allergic hypersensitivity. In those who are older, asthma occurs due to non-allergic hypersensitivity to irritants such as smog. In all cases of asthma, the patient can inhale easily but have trouble exhaling.

Through proper treatment of asthma, you can lead an active life, maintain wellness, and be without any symptoms. It is important to follow your FL asthma treatment every day, even on the days when you feel fine. It is of utmost importance to stay away from things that trigger asthmatic symptoms like cold air, smog, and smoke. Other allergies and viruses can also act as an asthma inducer, so try your best to avoid them as well. It is very possible to keep your asthma under control if you regularly treat it.

Chiropractic treatments for asthma have been useful in maintaining a symptom-free life; ask your Altamonte Springs chiropractor for more information.

It is well documented that people with intense back pain or long standing back pain may experience depression. However, the reverse can also happen, as a published study by Dr. Linda Carroll, of the University of Alberta, shows. Dr Kenneth Ross DC concurs with this notion. Those with depression may have an increase the risk of neck and low-back pain. It was revealed through Dr. Carroll’s study that people afflicted with depression are four times more prone to develop disabling low back pain and neck pain than those who have not been diagnosed with depression.

Studies suggest that depression has been attributed to the under-production of norepinephrine or serotonin, or both, and affects over 8 million people in the United States, FL inclusive.

A depressed person usually exudes the following signals of depression: unhappiness, grief, misery, and despair. In addition to the signs of depression, they lose their appetite and sex drive and have severe insomnia. In spite of the depression, psychomotor agitation has also been attached to these symptoms.

Depression patients in Altamonte Springs are can also be bipolar or manic-depressive; they have mental depression and the condition alternates between mania and depression.

At your chiropractic consultation, the doctor of chiropractic will run through your health history and administer neurological and orthopaedic tests. From this, your chiropractor at Chiropractic Pain Medicine and Weight Loss Center will be able to design a personalized treatment plan specific to your condition.
